Rally Legend: This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Won The 1961 Rally Of The 1000 Lakes
The Mercedes-Benz W111 “Heckflosse” would become a remarkably successful rally car largely thanks to its indestructible design. It would win the 1960 Rallye Monte-Carlo, the 1961 Algiers-Cape Town Trans-African Rally, and the 1961 Rally of the 1000 Lakes. The car you see here was pulled off a showroom floor and modified for rally. It was handed over to Rauno Aaltonen and his co-driver Väinö…

MINI at the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique 2017
The Rallye Monte Carlo Historique maintains a prized position in MINI history. Recognised as one of the world’s toughest rally competitions, a Classic Mini Cooper S conquered the event for the third time in 1967, taking first place. Fifty years after this symbolic triumph, MINI proudly rejoins the rally in 2017.
MINI’s 1967 success heralded a new era in rally driving, as motorsport enthusiasts around the world celebrated the astonishing big win by a small British car. Steered across the finish line by Finnish driver Rauno Aaltonen, victory was achieved in a Classic Mini Cooper S. This success followed previous wins in 1964 and 1965.
On January 27, the Finnish “Rally Professor” returns behind the wheel to relive the excitement of the third win at Monte Carlo Rally. Alongside co-driver Hans Sylvan (SWE), Aaltonen embarks on a journey to Monaco covering nearly 1,250 kilometres. On January 29, the duo start the classification leg from Monaco to Valence, following up with Part 1 of the common run through France’s Ardèche region before entering Part 2 and returning to Monaco to prepare for the final night run drive on January 31. Steep mountain roads and icy surfaces form the path through France’s Maritime Alps: these challenging conditions require the most experienced drivers to rely on exceptionally tough vehicles.
The Classic Mini Cooper S used in MINI’s 1965 Monte Carlo win is now ready for racing in this year’s challenge. Completely rebuilt in Gothenburg by Söderqvist Engineering, it features a racing engine from Swiftune Engineering, a British company producing Classic Mini engines for over 50 years. As a nod to 1967’s victory, the competition Classic Mini once again bears the start number 177.
While many hands reworked this Classic Mini for the starting blocks, Aaltonen (now aged 79) and Sylvan also undertook painstaking preparations. Together, the two drivers surveyed the entire route in a new MINI Cooper S Clubman in December and January, compiling their pacenotes en route. Both plan to take a measured approach during this year’s event, relying on routine and precision to hit first place.
From Monte Carlo to Dakar, MINI’s participation in today’s rally honours the automobile’s racing heritage while rising to new challenges. MINI continues to reinvent the motorsport experience across racetracks and open roads with the release of the new John Cooper Works models.
Celebrate the glory days of the Monte Carlo Rally Historique and the future of motorsport as Aaltonen, Sylvan and the Classic Mini Rally team enter this year’s event with all eyes on the prize.
The Rallye Monte Carlo Historique 2017 runs January 27th to 31st. For more on the event, check back on Tumblr and follow MINI on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
